Axochiapan is the municipal seat of the area in Morelos and sits at about 1,030 meters elevation. The town is surrounded by neighboring municipalities to the north and west, with the state of Puebla bordering it to the east and south.
The territory was first inhabited by Olmec and Tlahuican peoples before coming under Aztec rule. Later it passed through Spanish colonial control and became an established municipality in the region.
