Basílica de Ocotlán

The Basílica de Ocotlán is a basilica in Ocotlán, Mexico, situated on a hillside with a white stucco exterior accented by red roof tiles. The structure displays elaborate Churrigueresque ornamentation across its facade, including sculptural figures and a distinctive star-shaped window.

Construction of the basilica began in 1670, established on a site of deep religious significance. The location was chosen due to an earlier reported appearance attributed to the Virgin Mary in the 1500s.

This basilica serves as a pilgrimage destination centered on devotion to the Virgin of Ocotlán. People visit to connect with the reported divine appearance that drew faithful to this hillside location.

The basilica is accessible by a short walk north from the main square, followed by an uphill path to reach the church complex. The route is straightforward and manageable for most visitors on foot.

The statue of the Virgin of Ocotlán housed within measures approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and received a canonical coronation in 1909. This ceremonial recognition significantly elevated the shrine's importance in regional religious practice.
