Acosta Mine Museum, Mining museum in Mineral del Monte, Mexico
The Acosta Mine Museum is housed in a former silver mine and displays original machinery, equipment, and furnishings from different periods. The exhibits are spread across several halls within the historic mining complex.
Mining in these tunnels began in 1717 for silver extraction. From 1824 onward, British miners from Cornwall arrived and introduced steam-powered machinery, fundamentally changing operations.
The museum shows how miners lived and worked under extreme conditions for centuries. The displayed tools and personal objects tell the story of their daily struggles underground.
Visitors receive protective equipment including a hard hat and flashlight to explore the underground areas. The paths extend about 400 meters into the tunnels, so expect cool temperatures and bring layers.
The museum preserves an original morse code communication room where miners coordinated operations deep underground. This isolated communication hub allowed workers to stay connected across the entire tunnel network.
