Museo de Medicina Laboral, Medical heritage museum in Real del Monte, Mexico
The Museo de Medicina Laboral is a hospital museum in Real del Monte spread across three brick and stone buildings arranged around an octagonal fountain garden. Inside, the rooms feature high ceilings and large windows, with sections dedicated to hospital stays, X-ray services, gynecology, traumatology, and orthopedics.
The building began in 1907 as a mining hospital with two wards that each held twelve patients, serving mine workers and their families with medical care. It gradually expanded into a significant medical facility that provided treatments and pharmaceutical services to the mining community.
The museum displays medical equipment and furnishings that reflect how occupational health developed in mining communities. The exhibits show the daily realities of caring for mine workers and their families, along with how safety practices evolved over time.
Visitors can explore the different sections at their own pace, with the building layout allowing for self-guided learning through the spaces. Comfortable shoes are recommended since you will move between the three buildings and visit multiple stations throughout your visit.
A Dutch nurse named Nelly Zurhaar headed the nursing staff at the hospital and lived on the grounds for many years until 1959. Her long presence and dedication left a lasting mark on the medical care provided to the mining community.
