Perote

Perote is a town in Veracruz located at the base of the Cofre de Perote volcano at an elevation of 2,416 meters (about 7,927 feet). The setting is defined by mountainous terrain that forms a natural backdrop to this small community.

The settlement began in 1520 when Francisco Aguilar received permission to establish a trading post in Pinahuizapan. The place was later renamed to Perote and grew from a trading center into a permanent community.

Local people keep Spanish food traditions alive through making cured meats such as jamón serrano and chorizo, which remain important to daily life here. These crafts have been passed down through families and shape how the region is known to visitors.

Federal Highway 140 connects the town to neighboring municipalities with regular bus services to nearby places. The higher elevation means the climate is cooler than in lower regions, so bringing warm clothing is a good idea.

The San Carlos Fortress from the 18th century was originally a military structure and later served as a prison. This fort shows the area's strategic importance in regional history and how it changed over time.
