Zacapoaxtla is a mountain town in the Sierra Norte region of Puebla, situated at 1,826 meters elevation. The settlement sits surrounded by three peaks: Tres Cabezas, Gran Poder de Dios, and the extinct volcano Apaxtepec.
The settlement began under the name Zacapoaloyan and was shaped by the eruption of the Apaxtepec volcano. It received formal recognition as a town in March 1826.
The name comes from Nahuatl words referring to the counting of straw, a practice that once mattered for tax obligations. Today, visitors can encounter these linguistic roots in local ways of speaking and traditions.
The climate is mild with temperatures ranging from around 12°C in January to 24°C in May, making it pleasant year-round. September brings heavy rainfall, so planning outdoor activities for other months works better.
