Tecolutla is a coastal town at the mouth of the Tecolutla River where it meets the Gulf of Mexico, with long stretches of beaches offering calm waves and warm waters. The settlement began in pre-Hispanic times and took on a new structure after Spanish arrivals in 1522. The municipality was formally established in 1879.
