Ciudad Tula, Archaeological zone in Tula, Mexico
Ciudad Tula is an archaeological site in Tula containing the remains of an ancient settlement. The grounds include temple pyramids, ball courts, and a central plaza that reveal how the Toltec people organized their city.
The Toltecs built this city between the 9th and 12th centuries as a major center of power for their civilization. After the Toltecs declined, the area was resettled, and Spanish colonizers later founded a new city there.
The main pyramid displays four large warrior columns and carved friezes showing jaguars, birds, and human faces emerging from serpents. These images reflect the religious beliefs and artistic skills of the Toltec people.
Visitors can explore the site on their own or join guided tours to learn more about the Toltec people. The best time to visit is during cooler months, as the weather makes walking around the grounds more comfortable.
The site contains a palace complex with flat-roofed colonnaded hallways that showcase advanced building techniques of the Toltecs. This construction method was unusual for its time and shows the Toltec understanding of structure and design.
