The protected area encompasses 1,772 hectares of tropical rainforest with rivers and streams flowing through dense vegetation near the Mayan archaeological zone.
The national park received its official designation on July 20, 1981, through a presidential decree issued by Jose Lopez Portillo to protect natural resources.
The park contains multiple Mayan structures, including the Ball Court, the Temple of the Foliated Cross, and the Grand Palace within its boundaries.
Visitors can access the park via Highway 199 from Tuxtla Gutierrez or through Highway 186 from Villahermosa, with a turnoff at kilometer 23.
The area serves as a sanctuary for the endangered red macaw, which maintains the ecological balance through seed dispersal and plant pollination.
