Chiapas Highlands

The Chiapas Highlands form a mountain region in southeastern Mexico where limestone formations and volcanic rock shape the terrain. The elevation changes significantly, and the landscape is defined by varying heights and different rock types.

Spanish conquistadors arrived in this region in 1524 and established San Cristóbal de las Casas as an administrative center some years later. This arrival reshaped how the region was governed and settled.

Local communities speak Tsotsil and Tsetsal languages, and you can see their traditions reflected in daily life through farming methods, handmade textiles, and the way villages are organized. These practices shape how the landscape is used and how people move through it.

The best time to visit is November through April, when conditions are drier and more comfortable. From May onward, expect rainfall and warmer temperatures, so plan accordingly.

The region contains an extensive network of sinkholes and underground caverns formed by subterranean water systems. These hidden water features shape the landscape in ways that visitors may not always see from the surface.
