Regional Museum of Anthropology and History of Chiapas, Anthropology museum in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico.
The Regional Museum of Anthropology and History sits in a modern building near Madero Park with two main galleries presenting archaeological finds and objects related to the state's past. The rooms display items spanning different time periods and cultures that developed in this region.
The museum opened its doors in 1984 and displays findings from the Pre-classic period starting around 2000 BC through the Post-classic period after 900 AD. It documents the long spans of human settlement and cultural development across Chiapas.
The archaeological galleries display objects from Maya, Olmec, and Zoque peoples, showing how they lived and what they created with their hands and minds. You can see the tools, pottery, and decorative pieces that tell stories about daily life in ancient Chiapas.
The museum sits on Calzada de los Hombres Ilustres and opens from Tuesday through Sunday, giving you multiple days to make a visit. The entrance is easy to spot and the location sits in a central part of the city.
The building itself won an international architecture award in 1985 in Sofia, Bulgaria for its forward-thinking design and shape. This makes the museum structure itself a noteworthy example of contemporary architecture worth seeing.
