La Frailesca, Agricultural region in Chiapas, Mexico
The region stretches between the Sierra Madre mountains and Central Depression of Chiapas, with elevations ranging from 279 to 2,755 meters above sea level.
The name originates from Dominican friars who established haciendas in the region during colonial times and conducted evangelization missions among indigenous populations.
Local residents speak Frailescano, a Spanish-derived dialect influenced by rural expressions and maintained through generations in the seven municipalities of the region.
The territory covers 8,311 square kilometers and maintains a population density of 26 inhabitants per square kilometer, with Villaflores serving as the regional capital.
The construction of the Belisario Dominguez hydroelectric dam in the 1960s transformed the local geography by creating the La Angostura reservoir.
