Zoológico Miguél Álvarez del Toro

The 100-hectare zoological park exhibits native Mexican wildlife within large forested enclosures across the El Zapotal nature reserve at 630 meters altitude.

Founded in 1942 by Elíseo Palacios, the institution changed locations twice before settling in its current facility south of Tuxtla Gutiérrez in 1980.

The facility carries out research programs and educational initiatives to protect Chiapas wildlife, displaying interpretive materials in English and Spanish throughout the exhibits.

Located at Calzada Cerro Hueco, the zoo welcomes visitors Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a general admission fee of 20 pesos.

The institution maintains the only successful breeding program for resplendent quetzals in captivity, releasing these birds into the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve.
