Sumidero Canyon, Natural canyon in Chiapas, Mexico

Sumidero Canyon is a deep gorge in Chiapas state where the Grijalva River runs between vertical limestone cliffs that rise in places over 900 meters. For roughly thirteen kilometers, the water cuts through gray and ochre rock faces covered with vegetation and forming small waterfalls.

The gorge formed around 35 million years ago through tectonic shifts that lifted the limestone and let the river carve deep into the rock. In pre-Hispanic times, the Chiapa people used the area as a refuge from Spanish conquerors in the sixteenth century.

The name Sumidero means drain or sink in Spanish, because the river disappears here between tight walls. Tourists often watch cormorants and herons at the shore that come to fish, and take photos of cave entrances along the route.

Boats leave from Chiapa de Corzo during daylight hours, and the trip takes about two hours on the water. Visitors should bring water, sun protection, and cash for entry since the route runs in the sun and offers little shade.

A natural pattern on a cliff face resembles a Christmas tree and forms when water runs down over moss-covered stones. Visitors also often spot crocodiles resting in the sun along the riverbank, barely moving.
