Bay of Campeche, Southern bay in Gulf of Mexico, Mexico

The Bay of Campeche is a large body of water in the Gulf of Mexico bordered by the Mexican states of Campeche, Tabasco, and Veracruz. Several major rivers including the Usumacinta, Grijalva, and Coatzacoalcos flow into it, creating a complex river delta system.

The bay was discovered and named by European explorers during their expedition along the Mexican coast in 1517. Afterward, these waters became important for trade and exploration of the region.

This body of water has long been central to the lives of fishing communities along its shores, who depend on its resources for their livelihoods. Local customs and daily routines remain tied to the rhythm of the water and the seasons.

The bay experiences active hurricane conditions from June through July, so visitors should check weather conditions before planning a visit to the area. The best time for activities is outside these months when waters are calmer.

These waters serve as a critical stopover point for millions of migrating birds traveling between North and South America. This bird migration makes the bay an important checkpoint in the annual rhythm of hemispheric travel.
