Puente de la Unidad

The Puente de la Unidad spans 3,277 meters across the Gulf of Mexico waters, featuring 72 spans of 45 meters each and one additional 37-meter span with a maximum clearance of 17 meters for maritime traffic.

Inaugurated in 1982 during José López Portillo's presidency, this bridge replaced the traditional ferry system after a tragic 1980 accident where over one hundred people lost their lives in a ferry sinking.

The bridge symbolizes unity and progress for Campeche's communities, strengthening social and economic cohesion between Carmen Island and the Yucatan Peninsula while fostering regional development and cultural exchange.

Approximately five thousand vehicles cross this 15.8-meter-wide bridge daily at speeds up to 60 kilometers per hour, connecting Carmen Island to mainland Mexico with two traffic lanes and safety shoulders.

This structure stands as Mexico's second-longest bridge and Latin America's fifth-longest sea bridge, built to withstand Gulf of Mexico conditions with rigorous static and dynamic load testing ensuring fifty years of operational life.
