Ring of cenotes

The Ring of Cenotes forms a circular chain of water-filled limestone sinkholes across the Yucatán Peninsula, creating natural pools connected by underground rivers.

The formation originated from the Chicxulub asteroid impact 66 million years ago, which created a crater rim where groundwater gradually dissolved the limestone bedrock.

Ancient Maya populations considered these cenotes sacred water sources, using them for ceremonies and daily activities while establishing settlements near these natural reservoirs.

The cenotes remain accessible throughout the year, with guided tours departing from Mérida offering swimming, snorkeling, and diving experiences in different locations.

Each cenote in the ring displays distinct geological features, from open-air pools to underground caves, housing specialized aquatic species adapted to these environments.
