Barrio de San Sebastián is a residential neighborhood in the southwestern part of Mérida's historic center, featuring colonial streets with period architecture and traditional buildings. The area is defined by the presence of a substantial church that rises above the surrounding structures, with local murals adorning the walls between key landmarks.

The neighborhood developed following the Spanish conquest in the 16th century as a residential area for the local population. Its growth accelerated when a royal road to a neighboring region opened in 1790, connecting the area to wider trade routes and increasing settlement.

The neighborhood comes alive during Hanal Pixán celebrations each October, when families gather to share traditional pib and other regional dishes. Walking through the streets at this time reveals how deeply the community values these seasonal gatherings and the food traditions that bind them together.

The market along Calle 70 and 77 offers regional ingredients and prepared foods that you can purchase and taste on the spot. The neighborhood is easy to explore on foot, with varied street layouts and quiet spots to pause and observe daily life.

The Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Church, built around 1800, originated as a humble chapel before becoming an elaborate building. Its architectural growth mirrors the prosperity that gradually transformed the surrounding neighborhood over decades.
