Barrio de San Sebastián

Located in the southwestern area of Mérida's historic center, San Sebastián features colonial streets with French cobblestones and traditional residential buildings.

The neighborhood expanded following the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, becoming a significant residential area when Lucas de Gálvez opened the royal road to Campeche in 1790.

The neighborhood hosts the Festival del Pib during Hanal Pixán celebrations in October, where local cooks present their versions of this traditional underground-baked dish.

The San Sebastián Market on Calle 70 and 77 provides regional ingredients and prepared foods, while colorful murals decorate walls between La Hermita and the main church.

The Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Church, built around 1800, stands as the architectural centerpiece of the district, transforming from a modest chapel into a grand religious structure.
