Cenote Kankirixché, Limestone sinkhole in Mukuyche, Mexico.
Cenote Kankirixché is a limestone cavern near Mukuyche with an opening roughly 90 meters across. Metal stairs descend about 15 meters to reach the water, which varies in depth from 5 to 50 meters depending on where you swim.
The Maya named this cave Kankirixché, which means yellow fruit of the tree in their language. This underground spring was essential for settling the region and remains a key part of local history.
This cenote held sacred importance for the Maya and served as a vital water source for surrounding communities. Today you can sense how deeply connected people remain to these underground waters that shaped their survival.
The water is clear enough for swimming and snorkeling, and equipment rentals are available on site. Wear sturdy shoes to navigate the metal stairs safely and handle slippery surfaces around the cave entrance.
Tree roots penetrate the cave ceiling and form natural columns stretching down into the clear water. These roots give the cave a distinctive appearance and show how the ecosystem above and below ground connects together.
