Pyramid of the Magician, Mayan pyramid in Uxmal, Mexico
The Pyramid of the Magician is an archaeological structure in Uxmal, Yucatán, Mexico, built on an oval base that reaches 35 meters in height. The building consists of five layered temples constructed during successive building phases.
The site was built between the 6th and 10th centuries and served as the religious center of the city. Over several hundred years temples were added and reshaped.
The outer walls show large mask reliefs of Chaac the rain god, whose style is typical for the Puuc region. These carvings remain visible across the entire front of the building.
The climb to the upper temple follows a steep stairway whose steps are high by modern standards. Visitors should expect physical effort and wear sturdy footwear.
An older temple entrance lies hidden on the western side and aligns with the sunset during the summer solstice. This opening was covered by the outer facade during later expansions.
