Grutas de Bustamante, Show cave in Bustamante, Mexico.
Grutas de Bustamante is a limestone cave system in the Sierra de Gomas mountains featuring large chambers decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. The passages wind through the rock for thousands of meters, creating different sections for visitors to explore.
The caves were discovered in 1906 when a local resident noticed cold air flowing from a crack in the ground while searching for plants. This led to exploration and eventual opening of the site to the public.
The caves contributed to Bustamante receiving the Pueblo Mágico designation in 2018, recognizing the area's natural and cultural heritage within Nuevo León.
The cave is accessible through guided tours that require an uphill walk to the entrance. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven ground and potentially slippery surfaces inside.
The cave walls contain marine fossils showing that the region was once submerged under water millions of years ago. These remains help visitors understand how dramatically the landscape has changed over time.
