Wells of Baján

The Wells of Baján are multiple water extraction points located in northern Coahuila between two major cities. The site has served the region's water needs for centuries and remains accessible to visitors today.

On March 21, 1811, Mexican independence leaders Miguel Hidalgo and Ignacio Allende were captured at these wells by royalist forces. This event became a pivotal moment in the nation's early independence struggle.

A nine-meter obelisk stands at the location, displaying the national shield and a commemorative plaque. Visitors can read inscriptions that honor the independence movement leaders connected to this place.

The site is reachable via a paved road that leads to an unpaved path through the landscape. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven terrain.

The site holds official recognition as an 'Altar de la Patria', a national shrine honoring significant historical moments. This designation reflects how important this location remains in Mexico's national memory.
