Mile Canyon

Mile Canyon is a historic district stretching about a mile along the Rio Grande near Langtry, featuring deep limestone walls and rock formations carved by water over vast periods of time. The area is marked by natural geological features shaped through erosion and the river's movement.

The area served as a hunting location for Native Americans thousands of years ago, who used Bonfire Shelter as a bison jump site. Evidence of human activity in these shelters traces back to 13,500 years ago.

The Lower Pecos Canyonlands Archaeological District contains multiple cave sites that preserve evidence of prehistoric human settlements and activities across 1,500 acres.

Visitors need to know that the site sits on private land and requires advance permission and special arrangements to visit. Guided tours are necessary to explore the archaeological areas responsibly.

University research teams conduct ongoing excavations uncovering tools and artifacts that reveal details about daily life in prehistoric times. These studies help expand our understanding of how early people survived and adapted in this region.
