Randolph Air Force Base

Randolph Air Force Base is a military air installation in Bexar County, Texas, covering more than ten square kilometers. The complex includes training facilities, administrative structures, and runways arranged in a circular pattern.

The facility opened in 1930 and was named after Captain William Millican Randolph, who died in an aircraft crash. It trained instructor pilots from the start and now forms part of Joint Base San Antonio.

The main structure displays a Mediterranean design with white facades, tile roofs, and arched walkways reminiscent of southern Spain. This style was common in Texas during the 1920s and suited the warm regional climate.

The installation operates as part of Joint Base San Antonio and offers training programs for flight instructors. Access is restricted to military personnel and authorized visitors, so check entry requirements in advance.

The circular layout came from a 1928 design by First Lieutenant Harold Clark and aimed to improve training efficiency through clever building placement. This concept remained unusual among military installations and made the complex an example of functional architecture.
