Bacliff, Coastal census-designated place in Galveston County, Texas.
Bacliff is a census-designated place on the western shore of Galveston Bay in Galveston County, Texas. It sits on flat, low-lying coastal land with direct access to the bay, and the waterfront gives the community its main sense of place.
The area was first developed in 1910 under the name Clifton-by-the-Sea, when two landowners laid out parks and summer homes along the bay shore. The name changed over the following decades until the community settled into its current form as an unincorporated place.
Bacliff has a notable Vietnamese fishing community that has worked the bay for decades, and their presence is visible along the waterfront in the form of boats, nets, and small seafood operations. This mix of Gulf Coast traditions and Southeast Asian fishing culture gives the place a character that sets it apart from other communities on the bay.
Bacliff is close to Dickinson, which is where most shops, services, and transport connections can be found. A personal vehicle is essentially necessary to get around, as public transport in this part of the Texas coast is very limited.
Despite repeated proposals over the years, Bacliff has never been incorporated into a larger municipality, and two separate water utility districts continue to manage local services independently. This makes it an unusual case along the Texas Gulf Coast, where most communities of a similar size have eventually merged with or been absorbed by nearby cities.
