Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, Former airport in Austin, United States
Robert Mueller Municipal Airport was a regional airport northeast of downtown Austin that served travelers and cargo operations until its closure in 1999. Today the property contains homes, shops, offices, and a film studio where movies and television shows are produced.
Operations began in 1930 after the Austin city council approved a name honoring commissioner Robert Mueller. The facility added a new terminal building in 1961 before closing to commercial air traffic in 1999.
The airport site transformation into a mixed-use community reflects Austin's commitment to urban development and community-focused planning initiatives.
The site is easy to reach by car or public transportation from central Austin. You can walk through the residential neighborhoods and visit Austin Studios when production activities are happening.
The original control tower still stands on the property as a reminder of when planes took off and landed here daily. This surviving structure offers visitors a tangible link to the site's past as a working airport.
