Colorado Bend State Park, State park in San Saba and Lampasas Counties, United States.
Colorado Bend State Park is a natural area in San Saba County and Lampasas County covering 5328 acres (2155 hectares) along the Colorado River. The river cuts through limestone bluffs forming canyons, springs, and wooded stretches between open grasslands.
The state of Texas acquired the land in 1984 and opened it to visitors three years later. Earlier settlers used the riverbanks for grazing and built simple structures whose remains are still visible today.
Gorman Falls marks the most visited spot where visitors observe travertine deposits and moss curtains from a close viewing platform. Hikers often use the trails in early morning to watch wildlife along the riverbanks.
Hiking trails cross rocky terrain, so sturdy footwear and plenty of water are advisable. Some cave tours require advance registration because the number of participants is limited.
Several caves in the park shelter rare bat species found in only a few regions of Texas. Rangers occasionally lead visitors into these underground chambers to show the formations and inhabitants.
