Griggs Park, Park in Uptown, Dallas, United States
Griggs Park is a triangular public park of about eight acres in the Uptown district, framed by an expressway, a side street, and low apartment buildings. Its sloped lawns, an S-shaped paved walk, scattered leafy trees, and a small playground sit against a view of downtown towers.
The land first opened as a small city park in 1915 for the surrounding Black neighborhood, with a pool added soon after. A redesign in 2013 removed the old sports fields and reshaped the space into the broad lawns seen today.
A memorial near the lawn honors the minister and educator whose name this green space carries, a reminder of the earlier African American community that lived here. On ordinary days the park is used for yoga classes, picnics, dog walks, and quiet reading under the trees.
A paved route curves through the open lawn, making it easy to walk across without crossing the grass. Shade is most reliable near the tree line along the upper side, so a blanket placed there works well for a longer rest.
A stone monument stands among the trees on one side, easy to miss while looking at the skyline. It marks the history of a community that was displaced as the surrounding blocks filled with new housing.
