The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic church built in Gothic style with brick walls and a distinctive square tower. The structure features a pitched roof in a basilica-style floor plan and sits on extensive grounds.

The parish was formed in 1793, when its first church was little more than a shack; a more permanent church replaced it in 1819. In 1856 the Fabrique, the parish council of wardens, had Wilson Grisamore build the present church for $13,500, following the plan and dimensions of St. Joseph's Church in Thibodaux but with a bell tower fifteen feet higher. Grisamore was paid over four years, plus $1,129.48 for extra work in 1855.

The parish was formed in 1793, when the area was being settled by Canary Islanders and Acadians from 1779 onward. The present church, completed around 1856, stands close to the site of that first 1793 church, which was described as little more than a shack.

The church stands off Louisiana Highway 308, reached by a gravel road as recorded in 1979. It is a rural setting with no town street grid, so drivers should watch for the turnoff from the highway rather than a named street.

The church has preserved its original architecture while its architectural model, St. Joseph's Church in Thibodaux, was destroyed by fire in 1916. This survival makes it a rare surviving example of this particular architectural tradition in the region.
