St. Elizabeth Catholic Church

St. Elizabeth Catholic Church is a Gothic-style brick building with twin towers and a large rose window centered on the gable front. The interior is brightened by multiple stained glass windows that were installed between 1906 and 1910.

The current building was completed in 1902 to replace an earlier wooden structure that burned in 1854, marking the third church building for the parish since 1840. The Sisters of Mount Carmel had established a convent and school at the site in 1876 to provide education for local girls.

The church served as a gathering place for the community beyond Sunday services, hosting important local meetings and events. Residents viewed the building as a landmark that shaped their sense of belonging in Paincourtville.

The church is located along Louisiana Highway 403 and is easily spotted from the road thanks to its distinctive twin towers and rose window. Visiting the interior is best done during service times or by contacting the parish in advance to ensure access.

The design draws inspiration from a similarly styled church in Ploubalay, France, reflecting the community's transatlantic connections. However, the structure lost its original spires during the 1909 hurricane, which permanently altered its roofline.
