Southern University is a public higher education institution in the northern part of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The campus sits on the east bank of the Mississippi River and includes lecture halls, libraries, laboratories, and housing for students.
The institution opened in New Orleans in 1880 and moved to its present site in Baton Rouge in 1914. It was created as an educational establishment for African American students during the period of racial segregation in the southern states.
