St. Martin Parish

St. Martin Parish is an administrative division in south Louisiana that encompasses both developed areas and waterways split into two separate sections. The region borders the Atchafalaya Basin and features several river systems running through it.

The parish was established in 1811 as a separate administrative unit from Attakapas Parish. Over the next decades, portions of it were divided to form other parishes in the region.

French settlers from Acadia established communities in the late 1700s, and their Cajun heritage remains visible in local traditions, dialect, and music throughout the region today.

The parish government office is located in St. Martinville, where visitors can find information and public services. Be aware that the area spans two separate sections divided by waterways, which may affect travel planning.

The parish is geographically divided into two non-contiguous sections separated by the Atchafalaya River system. This unusual arrangement makes it one of the few fragmented parishes in the United States.
