Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo

The gardens and zoo is an 80-acre facility in Monroe housing over 500 animals from different regions in specially designed habitats. The collection features both native and exotic species.

The facility started in 1927 as Bernstein Park Zoo, named after Mayor Arnold Bernstein, and later expanded significantly under Mayor Howard's leadership. The project grew from a small urban green space into a regional destination.

The zoo hosts educational programs that introduce visitors to native Louisiana wildlife alongside animals from around the world. These learning experiences connect local communities with conservation efforts.

Visitors can explore the grounds using a train that runs around animal exhibits or take boat tours through natural swamp areas. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and prepare for warm, humid weather.

The Zoo Oasis features a splash pad where visitors can cool off on hot summer days while watching animals. This refreshment area is especially popular with children during Louisiana's intense heat.
