CSX Rigolets Pass Bridge, Railway bridge in eastern New Orleans, United States.
The CSX Rigolets Pass Bridge is a railway bridge that crosses the waterway connecting Lake Pontchartrain to Lake Borgne. The structure includes a swing section in the middle that opens for boats, while the single-track rails carry freight trains across the water.
The bridge was built by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad to carry its freight trains across the water. A tragic accident in 1896 caused a derailment that resulted in several deaths.
The bridge represents the industrial development of New Orleans, connecting the city with neighboring parishes through essential freight transportation networks.
The bridge is used only for freight train traffic today and is not open to the public. Visitors can best view the structure from the shoreline or nearby roads that offer good sightlines.
The strategic position of the bridge at coordinates 30°09′19″N 89°37′51″W made it a preferred crossing choice over Lake Pontchartrain for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad.
