George Wallace Tunnel, Road tunnel beneath Mobile River in Mobile, United States
The George Wallace Tunnel is a road tunnel carrying Interstate 10 through two separate tubes beneath the Mobile River. The structure connects downtown Mobile with Blakeley Island on the opposite side of the river.
The tunnel was completed in 1973 following a multi-year construction project. The infrastructure enabled direct traffic flow across the Mobile River and represented a major regional project.
This tunnel bears the name of George Wallace, who held the position of Governor of Alabama during multiple terms in the twentieth century.
The tunnel provides four lanes in each direction and requires no toll payment for passage. Vehicles can travel through at any time, and the route is well-marked as part of Interstate 10.
The tunnel sections were built separately and then submerged into position, allowing ship traffic to pass overhead. This construction method was technically challenging and preserved the river's use for maritime vessels.
