Naval Air Station Meridian, Military airfield in Mississippi
Naval Air Station Meridian is a military base in Mississippi covering about 8,000 acres, with an additional 4,000 acres at Joe Williams Field for aircraft landings. The facility trains Sailors and Marines to fly jet aircraft and teaches them aviation techniques and technical skills needed for Navy and Marine Corps operations.
The base was founded in 1957 as Naval Auxiliary Air Station and officially opened in 1961 before becoming a full Naval Air Station in 1968. It was designated a Major Shore Command in 1982, marking its importance as a key center for Navy land-based operations.
The base is located about 15 to 20 miles northeast of Meridian, Mississippi, with two entrance gates, one open 24 hours daily. Visitors can best reach the facility by flying into Meridian Regional Airport or taking buses to nearby cities like Jackson, with the nearest Amtrak station roughly 20 miles away in Meridian city.
During hurricanes, aircraft from Florida bases would fly here for shelter, which helped the station grow faster and build better housing and roads. This temporary refuge role became an unexpected catalyst for the base's expansion and infrastructure improvements.
