Hanover, Administrative division in northwestern Jamaica.
Hanover is an administrative division in northwestern Jamaica featuring diverse terrain and geography. The parish includes mountainous areas, flowing waterfalls, and a coastline along the northern shore, with Lucea serving as the main administrative center.
The parish was established in 1723 from parts of neighboring administrative areas. Its name reflects the British colonial period, referring to the German royal house that then ruled England.
People here have long roots in farming, growing yams, sugarcane, ginger, and rice on family plots and larger fields. Walking through the region, you notice how much of the landscape is shaped by these crops and the work that goes into them.
Lucea is the main hub where you can find government offices and essential services. The harbor area provides coastal access, and roads connect to the mountainous interior and surrounding communities.
Fort Charlotte overlooks Lucea harbor and played a key role in shipping during the 1700s. The fort predates other major coastal ports that would eventually become busier shipping points.
