Edwin and Katherine Atkins established the garden in 1901 as a research station for sugar cane, collaborating with Harvard University botanists.
The garden functions as an educational center where students and researchers study tropical biology and plant conservation methods.
Located 14 kilometers from central Cienfuegos, the garden welcomes visitors daily from 8 AM to 5 PM with an entrance fee of 2.50 CUC.
The garden maintains specialized collections of bamboo plantations featuring 29 different species and a cactus section containing 200 distinct varieties.
