Estadio Augusto César Sandino, Baseball stadium in Santa Clara, Cuba
Estadio Augusto César Sandino is a multi-use stadium in Santa Clara, home ground of the Villa Clara baseball team. Architects Emilio Castro and Gustavo R. Arnavat projected it in 1963 using articulated precast molding, and it opened on January 8, 1966. Its gallery has 148 columns between 2 and 12 m high carrying 100 beams; the lobby floor is tiled with Cuban marble, the rest polished concrete.
The stadium was designed by architects Emilio Castro and Gustavo R. Arnavat and opened in 1966. It was among the first modern sports facilities built in Cuba during that era.
The team's nickname, La Furia Naranja (Orange Fury), has since 2009 been applied to everything painted orange across Santa Clara. The stadium also hosts concerts: Joan Manuel Serrat, Sonia Silvestre and Lucecita Benítez have performed here.
The venue is lit by ten lighting towers that make it possible to watch games in the evening. A water system supplies the grounds through gravity, making the infrastructure self-sufficient.
The architecture was so successful that the same design was later copied in other Cuban cities like Camagüey and Matanzas. This shows how much trust there was in this approach.
