Tren Blindado, Monument to the Battle of Santa Clara in Cuba.

Tren Blindado is a memorial featuring actual train cars from the conflict, a commemorative obelisk, and sculptures arranged in an open plaza beside the railway station. The cars have been preserved and now function as exhibition spaces documenting this historical moment.

On 23 December 1958 Batista sent an armoured train from Havana with two diesel locomotives, seventeen freight cars and 373 soldiers, plus ammunition and provisions for two months. It reached Santa Clara the next day and stopped at the foot of Loma del Capiro. On 29 December eighteen guerrillas under Che Guevara attacked; Guevara bulldozed 30 metres of track at the level crossing to derail it, and the officers surrendered at 19:00. Batista fled Cuba on 1 January 1959.

The site is known as the Tren Blindado, the armoured train, after the train captured here on 29 December 1958. The city is still called the "city of the heroic guerrillas" because of that victory. Silvio Rodríguez sang the events in his 1984 song "El Tren Blindado", and the Dutch punk band The Ex recorded a song of the same name.

The site is located on Avenida Liberación next to the rail line and is easily walkable from the city center. Visitors should allow time to explore the train cars and can arrange guided tours in several languages.

Four original cars of the train stand beside the working tracks, not at the derailment point itself. The bulldozer Guevara used to tear up 30 metres of rail at the level crossing is displayed on the grounds, and some cars still show blast marks.
