Iznaga Tower, Bell tower in Valle de los Ingenios, Cuba
The Iznaga Tower is a seven-story bell tower rising 45 meters above the valley with an interior staircase that visitors can climb. At the top, an observation platform provides open views across the valley and the surrounding landscape.
Built in 1816, the tower was part of the sugar plantation infrastructure and its bell coordinated the daily rhythm of work in the valley. This structure marked a significant moment in the region's economic development.
The tower embodies memories of sugar production and its impact on the region's people and landscape. Today it stands as a landmark that helps visitors understand what shaped this valley and its communities.
The tower sits in the valley southeast of Trinidad and is reachable by car or heritage train. Wear comfortable shoes for the climb up the narrow interior stairs, and be prepared for wind at the top.
The original bell that once hung at the summit now rests at the base of the structure as a silent witness to the past. At its time, this tower was the highest structure across the entire Caribbean sugar region.
