Entabeni Game Reserve, Game reserve in Waterberg region, Limpopo, South Africa.
Entabeni Game Reserve is a protected game reserve in the Waterberg region of Limpopo, South Africa, covering several distinct ecosystems that include grasslands, wetlands, streams, and mountain terrain. The variety of habitats across the reserve supports a wide range of wildlife, including the Big Five.
The Waterberg region was once rich in wildlife, but hunting and farming over many decades reduced animal populations severely. Dedicated conservation work then allowed species to be reintroduced, and the reserve was built on this recovery.
The name Entabeni comes from Zulu and means "at the mountain", a direct reference to its setting in the Waterberg hills. Visitors who join guided village tours can observe daily life in nearby communities and speak with local residents.
The reserve sits about a three-hour drive north of Johannesburg and is malaria-free, which makes it accessible for visitors who prefer to avoid preventive medication. Only overnight guests are admitted, so booking well ahead and planning a stay of at least two or three nights is strongly recommended.
Entabeni is home to a Nature Guide Training school, where students learn wildlife management and conservation in the field. This means that some of the guides leading safaris in the reserve are actively completing their professional training during your visit.
