Grand Étang

Grand Étang is an artificial pond located in Saint-Benoît on Réunion Island, surrounded by thick forest growth. The body of water sits in a remote mountain area and receives water from a small creek fed by the Bras d'Annette waterfall.

This water body formed through ancient volcanic activity when lava flows created a natural dam that shaped the current landscape. The area was later modified and used by people over time.

The pond serves as a gathering location for local residents who participate in fishing activities and nature observation throughout the year.

The site sits in a remote mountain area, so plan your journey in advance and bring sturdy shoes for walking. The best time to visit is during the dry season when the trails are less slippery.

What stands out is that this pond has no outflow system and relies entirely on water from the Bras d'Annette waterfall creek. This closed system makes it an unusual hydrological feature in the region.
