Black Canyon City

Black Canyon City is a settlement in desert terrain located north of Phoenix in Yavapai County and crossed by Interstate 17. The area consists of open land with sparse vegetation and relatively flat to gently rolling terrain.

The settlement began in the 1870s when Jack Swilling established residence there and received its postal name in 1894 as Cañon. Growth followed the transportation routes that connected the region.

The community gathers in local parks where residents spend time outdoors and connect with the natural surroundings. This focus on outdoor life shapes how people experience the place day to day.

The location is easily accessible via Interstate 17 and sits between larger cities. Visitors will find basic services here, but should plan visits to nearby towns for most shopping or dining needs.

The groundwater in the area contained naturally high levels of arsenic that exceeded federal safety standards. The community invested in water treatment systems to make the supply safe for residents.
