The Hundición de Yay is a natural canyon depression in a desert region near Sanare, Venezuela. Rocky terrain covers the area at moderate elevation, with a small stream running through the formation that continues to shape the landscape.
The depression formed over time through natural erosion processes that carved the landscape. Spanish colonizers later used this canyon as a passage when traveling between Sanare and El Tocuyo.
Local families have long used this land for raising goats and crafting pottery from the clay found in the surrounding terrain.
The site is roughly 40 minutes by car from Sanare in the Andrés Eloy Blanco Municipality. Visitors should be ready for desert climate and rocky terrain when exploring.
A small stream runs year-round through this desert depression despite the arid climate, continuously shaping the rock formations. This makes the site remarkable for watching erosion at work.
