Habana del Este, Administrative municipality in eastern Havana, Cuba.
Habana del Este is an eastern municipality that stretches along about 24 kilometers of coastline and includes eight public beaches from Tarará to Brisas del Mar. The neighborhoods here vary in structure, from older residential areas to modern housing developments with different architectural styles.
The area emerged in 1976 during a major reorganization of Havana, when the city was divided into separate administrative zones. This restructuring allowed for better management of urban growth and the expanding population.
Neighborhoods here maintain local roots through community centers where residents gather for music performances, dance classes, and art exhibitions. These spaces serve as social hubs where people share and celebrate their everyday traditions.
The area connects to central Havana through the Túnel de La Habana, which runs beneath Havana Bay and provides direct access. Those exploring the region should know that beaches and neighborhoods are easily reachable through this tunnel connection.
The residential area of Alamar was built using an unusual approach where more than 300 buildings were constructed through micro-brigades with future residents participating in the construction themselves. This community involvement model made residents active participants in shaping their own neighborhood.
