Islamorada, Coastal village in Florida Keys, US
Islamorada is a coastal settlement spread across five islands in the Florida Keys and includes Tea Table Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Windley Key, and Plantation Key. Bridges connect these islands and allow for continuous passage along the coast.
The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 destroyed large parts of the settlement at the time and resulted in 423 deaths. A memorial in the area contains the ashes of 300 victims and commemorates the disaster.
The local museum dedicated to diving history displays equipment from several centuries and documents how underwater techniques developed over time. Visitors can examine old helmets and suits once used for diving in the Atlantic.
The Overseas Highway, Route 1, runs through the entire settlement and allows travelers to continue north toward Miami or south toward Key West. Visitor centers along the road offer information and maps for exploring the coast.
The area sits along the migration routes of large fish species such as tarpon, bonefish, and permit, offering year-round fishing opportunities. Many anglers come here to seek these fish in the shallow coastal waters.
