Valle Nuevo National Park is a mountain protected area in La Vega Province that spans nearly 1,000 square kilometers. The terrain includes cloud forests, mountain plateaus, and grasslands situated at approximately 2,200 meters in elevation.
Early Spanish chroniclers documented lakes in this highland region during the colonial period. The area later became a protected space to preserve the fragile mountain landscape.
The Valle Nuevo Pyramids were built by Spanish craftsmen in 1958 to mark the completion of the San José de Ocoa-Constanza road. They serve today as a gathering point where visitors can stop and take in the mountain views while exploring the highlands.
Route 41, also known as Antonio Duvergé Road, runs directly through the park from north to south. You can reach the area in about two hours of driving from Santo Domingo.
In this Caribbean mountain region, temperatures at the highest elevations drop below freezing and can fall to minus 7 degrees Celsius. These extreme conditions create frost on the ground, which often surprises visitors expecting tropical warmth.
