Yuna Rivev, River system in Cordillera Central, Dominican Republic
The Yuna River is a river system in the Cordillera Central of the Dominican Republic that flows northeast through the Cibao Valley. Its course stretches roughly 185 kilometers from its source near Bonao to Samaná Bay.
The name comes from the Taíno people, an indigenous group who lived in the Dominican Republic before European colonization. The river served as an important water route for early settlers in the region.
The river supports farming communities along its course, particularly those growing rice in the valleys around Bonao. People depend on its flow for irrigation during the dry season.
You can reach the river from several locations near established communities, with the most accessible sections found between Bonao and the Hatillo Dam. The best viewpoints lie along established routes and bridges that cross the valley.
The river delta flows into Los Haitises National Park before reaching Samaná Bay. This junction creates one of the Caribbean's largest estuaries, home to extensive mangrove forests and wildlife.
