Santiago Rodríguez Province, Northwestern province in Dominican Republic
Santiago Rodríguez is a province in the northwest of the Dominican Republic with mountains, forests, and valleys across its territory. The landscape is defined by several waterways and lies in a region of moderate elevation.
The province was created as a separate administrative region in 1948 when it split from Monte Cristi. Sabaneta was established as the administrative center of this new territorial division.
The province is known for its tobacco farming, beekeeping, and timber work, traditions that farming families have followed for generations. These activities shape daily life in communities across the region today.
The province connects to neighboring regions through a network of secondary roads, with the main city of Sabaneta linked to other important towns. The road system makes travel through the area feasible, though some routes through hilly terrain are narrower.
The Monción Dam within the province serves as a large freshwater reservoir supporting fishing and irrigation projects in the surrounding area. This dam plays a key role in local water supply and economic activities.
